Jack Prelutsky is an American Author of children's literature. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 8, 1940 and currently lives in Seattle, Washington with his wife Carolynn. While in his grade school in Bronx, New York, Prelutsky took piano, singing lessons, and participated in shows at school. However, due to a certain teacher that left a bad impression on him, Jack grew to hate poetry. However, when Prelutsky was in his early twenties, he started doing doodles and water colors of animals that did not exist. One day, he chose to write poems for each and every drawing that he had done of these animals. Upon reading them, a friend of Prelutsky advised him to take it to an editor, as he had enjoyed the works very much. After this was accepted, he continued to write poems and still does to this very day.
Some of his award winning works are the books Nightmares: Poems to Trouble Your Sleep, The Mean Old Mean Hyena, and Something BIG Has Been Here. In 2006, the Poetry Foundation chose Jack Prelutsky as the winner of the Children’s Poet Laureate award.
A Pizza the Size of the Sun
I’m making a pizza the size of the sun,
a pizza that’s sure to weigh more than a ton,
a pizza too massive to pick up and toss,
a pizza resplendent with oceans of sauce. I’m topping my pizza with mountains of cheese,
with acres of peppers, pimentos, and peas,
with mushrooms, tomatoes, and sausage galore,
with every last olive they had at the store. My pizza is sure to be one of a kind,
my pizza will leave other pizzas behind,
my pizza will be a delectable treat
that all who love pizza are welcome to eat. The oven is hot, I believe it will take
a year and a half for my pizza to bake.
I hardly can wait till my pizza is done,
my wonderful pizza the size of the sun.
